Help with my canon powershot sx30?

i thought it was going to be a very good camera but it has proven its self to be difficult. i have tried taking pictures of the moon, fireflies in the night and also lightning. I know all these things are difficult for most people to capture, but i would like to know what setting would be best to use... it seems my shutter speed is too slow, even if i set it to the highest possible settings and that i can set the white balance. Obviously it's going to be hard to set the white balance for something that is constantly changing i.e. lightning. Also, when i want to take a picture of the moon i want it to be defined so i can see the dark and light spots like i can see it with my eyes... and if i try to take pictures of fireflies all i see is darkness on the screen i am very unsure of what to do and how to do it for this camera. my questions are what settings should i try? ... should i get a different camera, if so what kind? any suggestions or help is welcome.
